Universally recognised as the symbol of the Speaker’s authority the Mace was first put into use on September 10, 1957, and was designed and made by Gerrard and Company Ltd., Crown Jewellers, formerly the Goldsmiths and Silversmiths Company Ltd. It was presented to the Speaker, Sir Donald Jackson, K.B., by the then Governor of British Guiana, Sir Patrick Renison, C.M.G., KC.M.G., which followed a blessing by the Archbishop of the West Indies, Dr. Alan John Knight, C.M.G., D.D. The Mace is always to be borne on the right shoulder of the Sergeant-at-Arms, and precedes the Speaker whenever he, or she, is entering or leaving the Chamber.
