The Statue of Hubert Nathaniel Critchlow

Standing in the North-Eastern corner of the compound of the Public Buildings, is the imposing statue of Hubert Nathaniel Critchlow, O.B.E. (1884-1958); the father of trade-unionism in British Guiana, and the West Indies. The sculpture in bronze stands on six feet, six inches (2 meters) high pedestal and was designed and sculpted by famous artist Mr. E. R. Burrowes, O.B.E. with the assistance of Messers. Walter Milling and Andrew Lyght. It was unveiled on December 2, 1964, by the then Premier, Dr. Cheddi Jagan.
